Day 73, prostitute ministry

So today was an off day for us. We spent it sleeping in, reading, laundry, and then met up with Ms Sylvia for her prostitute outreach.
Every Saturday, she goes to Geylang, an area of Singapore known as their Red Light district. Sad but this is one of the most popular places to be in Singapore. As you enter the area, you are met with nasty men lining the streets selling sex paraphernalia for the potential purchasing men. We walked through several streets in this area. 95% nasty men, and 5% women. And the poor prostitutes lining the streets waiting on someone to buy their time. Some look like gorgeous models, while some looked haggled. Whatever taste any man could want, they had.
Sylvia was explaining everything to us that was going on. She told us not to make eye contact with the men, and to be careful that as Americans, we are more desirable (but that we were safe). So we walked the streets looking for prostitutes to reach out to. We saw tons, but none were secluded where we could talk. Their pimps were always near keeping a close eye, and since Sylvia does this weekly, she knows not to mess with the girls when they are in such close proximities to their pimps.
I watched the girls, their body language, and their faces. Some wanted to be there, but it was obvious some didn't and were screaming for help with their eyes. Broke my heart. I watched one girl grab a passer-by asking him if he wanted her. He said no, but she wouldn't let him go. She was insistent and wasn't taking no for an answer. Showed me just how desperate the girls were. They knew just what they were doing.
I felt so dirty just being in such a place. The streets were lined with whore houses with frosted glass and crude signs hanging outside. And the government doesn't stop this because it is such a tourist destination and they make tons of money off of them. So sad.
In the event we would have been able to talk to one who was alone, we simply tell them Jesus loves them and wait on a reaction. If they seem to be interested, then we would reach out to them. If not, we simply give them a small card inviting them to "meeting with live music and free food". Saying a church could scare them off. We will go back next week and try again!
